ECDL - European Computer Driving Licence

What is the ECDL?

The European Computer Driving Licence® (ECDL) is the internationally recognized qualification which enables people to demonstrate their competence in computer skills. The record breaking ECDL is the fastest growing IT user qualification in over 125 countries. ECDL is designed specifically for those who wish to gain a benchmark qualification in computing to enable them to develop their IT skills and enhance their career prospects. No prior knowledge of IT or computer skills is needed to study ECDL.

How does ECDL work?

The ECDL syllabus is designed to cover the key concepts of computing, its practical applications and their use in the workplace and society. It is broken down into seven modules, each having a 45 minute assessment, which must be passed before an ECDL qualification is awarded. The modules may be taken in any order and over any period of time up to three years - even all at once - offering maximum flexibility.

The seven modules that make up the ECDL qualification are:

  • Module 1 - Basic concepts of IT
  • Module 2 - Using the computer and managing files
  • Module 3 - Word processing
  • Module 4 - Spreadsheets
  • Module 5 - Database
  • Module 6 - Presentation
  • Module 7 - Information and Communication

For those of you who want to try something a little more challenging, then there is the ECDL Advanced. ECDL Advanced is a high-level programme certifying mastery of elements of the ECDL core qualification. Designed to build upon the ECDL certification, ECDL Advanced is the logical progression for individuals who have achieved their core ECDL certification and who wish to enhance and test their skills and knowledge; and to demonstrate their competence in using core computer software at a much higher level.

How Does the ECDL Advanced Work?

The ECDL Advanced modules give Candidates the opportunity to become expert in the use of ICT applications, acquiring skills sets over and above the routine features of the software. ECDL Advanced covers the following software:

  • Advanced Word Processing
  • Advanced Spreadsheets
  • Advanced Databases
  • Advanced Presentations

ECDL Advanced is a modular qualification and a certificate is awarded for successfully passing the test for each module. on completing all four advanced modues you can apply to become an ECDL Expert which will provide you with a route to Associate Membership of the British Computer Society (AMBCS) .
